Rett syndrome is a neurological and genetic developmental disorder that mainly affects women. Babies with Rett syndrome appear to grow and develop normally at first, but then they stop developing and even lose skills at various stages of the disease throughout their lives. The NICHD has supported and continues to support research on Rett syndrome for the past 25 years in the hope of learning how to slow, stop, and eventually reverse the effects of the condition.
