A fungal nail is a fungal infection of the nail. These are also called fungal nail.

The infection often starts at the nail edge and will then turn a white-yellow, green or brown color. Then the nail becomes thick and crumbly and in some cases may come off partially or completely.

What causes a fungal nail?

A fungal nail develops around a damp or damaged nail or skin. Fungi thrive in warm and damp places such as sweat socks and shoes. In a drier environment you will therefore encounter fewer fungal nails. Factors such as reduced immunity and hereditary predisposition can also play a role in the development of fungal nails.

Contagious?

Lime nails can be easily transferred and therefore proper hygiene is desired. Always wear slippers in public places where other people walk around with bare feet, such as by the pool, sauna or swimming pool.
