Main conditions are congenital conditions that result from damage to or abnormal development of the nascent nervous system. Most main conditions are caused by a disorder that occurs very early in the development of the fetal nervous system. Damage to the developing nervous system is a leading cause of chronic, disabling conditions and sometimes death in infants, children and even adults. Main conditions can be affected by hereditary or genetic conditions or by environmental exposure during pregnancy (eg medication taken by the mother, maternal infection, radiation exposure). Some main conditions occur when the cranial sutures (the fibrous joints that connect the bones of the skull) join prematurely. Understanding the normal development of the human nervous system can lead to a better understanding of main disorders.

Therapy

Treatments for main conditions depend on the specific type of condition. For most main conditions, treatment is only symptomatic and supportive. In some cases, shunts with anticonvulsant medication or physiotherapy are indicated.

Prognosis

The degree to which damage to the developing nervous system causes damage to the mind and body varies enormously. Many disabilities are mild enough for those affected to eventually function independently in society. Others are not. Some babies, children, and adults die; others remain completely disabled; and an even larger population is partially disabled and functioning well below normal capacity.
