Spirulina, also known as a "superfood," is considered a complete source of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, protein, amino acids, fatty acids and chlorophyll. But what exactly is spirulina and what are its scientifically proven health effects?
Spirulina is a blue-green saltwater algae with a spiral structure, hence the name "spirulina". Unlike most other algae, spirulina has a soft cell wall, which makes it easier for the nutrients to be absorbed by our gastrointestinal tract. There are two types of spirulina: Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima. These strains are cultivated worldwide, mainly in North America and Asia, and are used as dietary supplements.
Spirulina is rich in various nutrients, such as vitamins (A, C, E, K, B1, B2 and B6), minerals (magnesium, iron and calcium), proteins (with a protein concentration of 70%), fatty acids (omega 3 and 6 ), antioxidants (such as phycocyanin), chlorophyll and iodine. This diversity of nutrients contributes to a wide range of health benefits. For example, spirulina can help maintain normal blood sugar levels, maintain and build muscle, and has an antioxidant effect that protects healthy cells and tissues from external influences. In addition, the supplement can give energy in case of fatigue, support the immune system and the thyroid gland, and help with intestinal complaints. In addition, spirulina has anti-inflammatory properties.
Scientific research has found evidence for several health benefits of spirulina. For example, a recent US review study gathered evidence for the link between spirulina and weight loss. Current literature indicates that spirulina may help reduce body fat, waist circumference, BMI and appetite. In addition, a recent Iranian study that analyzed eight studies found that spirulina had significant benefits in improving blood lipid profiles in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed a significant decrease in cholesterol levels, as well as beneficial effects on blood sugar levels and lipid profiles. Another recent review study gathered experimental and clinical evidence for spirulina's effects on brain health. The results suggest that spirulina may support normal brain function and nervous system development, as well as help with physical and mental fatigue.
Overall, scientific evidence points to several health benefits of spirulina. It is available in powder form and in the form of tablets.
