AI screening better for breast cancer?

A large-scale Swedish study shows that artificial intelligence (AI) is better at screening for breast cancer than radiologists. The technology can also alleviate the high workload of radiologists.
The study shows that AI can supplement or even partially replace the work of radiologists. More than 80,000 women participated in the study. The software, developed by the Dutch company ScreenPoint and trained on hundreds of thousands of breast scans, detected breast cancer more often than radiologists, without causing more false alarms. Early detection of a tumor improves the prognosis of patients.
In the Netherlands alone, more than 800,000 women participate in breast cancer screening programs every year. Radiologists search 'mammograms' for abnormalities that may indicate cancer. This is usually done independently by two radiologists to minimize the chance of error. Due to the aging population and the growing shortage of radiologists, this professional group has to deal with a high workload, which can be alleviated by AI. (AP)
